Car not in your name · Orange County
Selling a car that isn't in your name
It happens all the time: the car you drive is titled to a parent, a spouse, an ex, or the person you bought it from who never did the transfer. You can still end up selling it, but the rule is simple — only the owner or owners on the title can sell the car. Here is how that works and how we help you get there.
Option 1: the owner on the title signs
The simplest way is for the person on the title to sell the car to us directly. They sign the title and the sale paperwork, show a photo ID, and we pay the owner the same day — cash, cashier's check or Zelle. If the owner can't come to our Santa Ana lot, we can schedule a time at their place in Orange County, Monday through Sunday, 8 AM to 9 PM.
If two owners are listed with "AND" between their names, both need to sign. If the title shows "OR", tell us and we'll check exactly who needs to sign before the appointment.
Option 2: transfer the car to you first
If the car really is yours — you bought it, or it was given to you — the owner on the title can transfer it into your name first. Then you sell it to us as the owner. If you already have a title the previous owner signed over to you but never filed it with the DMV, send us a photo: we'll explain what the DMV usually needs to finish the transfer, and we can handle that paperwork as part of the sale.
If you can't reach the owner, or the owner won't sign, we can't buy the car. No licensed dealer should buy a car without the owner's signature — that's what protects you, the owner and us.
Special cases we see often
- Spouse or parent is the owner. They sign as the seller; you can handle everything else with us.
- The owner passed away. See our page on selling an inherited car — the DMV has separate forms for that.
- There's a loan in the owner's name. We pay the lender directly; the owner on the loan and title still needs to sign.
- A business owns the car. Someone authorized to sign for the business signs the paperwork.
How it works
- Tell us about the carFill out the 1-minute form or call. A few photos and an honest description keep the price firm.

- Get paid the same dayBring it to our Santa Ana shop or we tow it free anywhere in Orange County. Cash, cashier's check or Zelle.
What to have ready
- The California title (pink slip) — signed by every owner listed on it.
- Photo ID of each owner who signs, and your own ID.
- Current registration card and loan info, if any.
- Keys and remotes you have.
Questions sellers ask
Can I sell my mom's car if she agrees?
Yes, with her signature. She signs the title and sale paperwork and shows her ID. We can meet her wherever is easiest in Orange County, and the payment goes to the owner.
I bought the car but never transferred the title. What now?
If you have the title signed over to you, send us a photo and we'll explain the next steps. If you don't, you'll need the owner on the title to sign. We can't buy the car without that.
My ex's name is on the title too. Do they have to sign?
If the names are joined with "AND", yes — every owner signs. If it says "OR", send a photo of the title and we'll tell you who needs to sign.
Can you buy it with just my registration and keys?
No. Registration and keys don't prove ownership. The owner on the title has to sign, or the car has to be transferred to you first.
Ready to see what your car is worth?
It takes about a minute. No obligation, no spam — we only use your number to send the offer.
